Whitewashed Island with Granite Top
Oceanside Kitchen Studio built this open-plan kitchen over eight weeks on site, anchored by an extended island. A granite counter tops the whitewashed shaker base and gives a busy Vancouver Island household 11 feet of uninterrupted prep surface.
What changed
The house had a peninsula that cut the cooking zone off from the living room and forced everyone to walk around it. Taking it out meant relocating a drain and two circuits, so we had a licensed plumber and electrician do both under permit before the new cabinetry landed. We put the dishwasher and a microwave drawer in the replacement island, which keeps the perimeter clear for cooking, and we specified granite rather than quartz because the household wanted a surface that could take a hot pan. Eight weeks on site.
